Pruning Principles for Trees and Shrubs

Pruning often means cutting branches back, sometimes removing smaller limbs entirely to preserve or improve plant health and structure. But why is it important to know and understand the reasons for pruning? Pruning definition: selective cutting and removing of parts of a tree or shrub. It covers a number of horticultural techniques that control growth, shape, remove dead or diseased wood, and may stimulate the formation of flowers and fruit buds.
